Hello, I'm Tom Watts with the BBC News.

South Korea says North Korea has blown up a joint liaison office near their border that was set up to promote peace. It's unclear why Pyongyang has chosen this moment to take such an aggressive stunts against the South. Laura Bicker reports from Seoul. North Korea threatened to blow up the office in several statements, including one from the leader sister Kim Yo-jong, where she warned it would soon be collapsed. At 2:49 pm local time, a loud explosion was heard in the border town of Kaesong, and smoke was seen billowing from the area. Officials in Seoul have no confirmed that the office has been demolished. The South Korean government spent nearly $8 million refurbishing the site to help the two countries, which had officially still at war, communicate. Last week, North Korea abandoned the office and cut all hotlines with the south. Earlier, South Korea said it was stepping up security. The defense ministry said it was working with the US to closely monitor military moves in the North.

Italian police have arrested 13 suspected mafia associates with alleged links to crime families in the United States. They include the alleged mafia boss of the Sicilian port town of Castellammare del Golfo Francesco Domingo. Mr. Domingo is thought to be in contact with one of Europe's most wanted men, the fugitive mafia godfather Matteo Messina Denaro.

President trump says he'll sign an executive order to encourage police reform in the wake of George floyd's death. Officials say the measure will seek to improve officer training and root out those with previous bad behavior. Our North America correspondent Peter Bowes has more. Another aspect of this order is the encouragement of police forces around the country to deploy social workers to work alongside police officers in situations that are not violent. So it might be dealing with a drug case or dealing with the situation involving homelessness, a situation that may involve mental illness. And the main thrust appears to be, according to officials in the White House, to bring the police closer to communities.A man has been shot and wounded in the US state of New Mexico after violence erupted over the statue of a 16th century Spanish colonial settler. The shooting happened during a confrontation between protesters who wanted to pull down the statue of Juan de Onate and a group of armed men trying to protect it. Local officials say it will be removed for the moment. The incident comes amid heightened sensitivities over monuments linked to colonialism.

And that's the BBC news.
